This Week/Next Week

Week ending 18/5/18

This Week:

The children have had a very busy week at school. We have been working with clay - making some hats ready to paint in Arts Week. We have also designed and made out own lighthouses out of junk modelling. The children have learnt all about the job of a lighthouse.

On Thursday we walked to Otterton Mill. We saw the millers milling the wheat to make flour. It was very noisy but great fun. We got to eat bread from the Mill and it was very tasty!

Next Week: 

This is the last week before half term. On Thursday we will be walking to the River Otter to meet Class One from Otterton school to enjoy a picnic together and to celebrate all we have achieved so far this term.

Week Ending 11/5/18

This Week:

The children make lists of healthy ingredients. We turned these into healthy sandwiches and took them up to the Recreation Ground for a lovely picnic.

The children have also been looking at place value in maths - learning how to partition numbers.

Next Week:

We are looking forward to finding out all about milling with our visit to Otterton Mill on Thursday.

Week ending 27/4/18

This week:

 

We enjoyed making jam sandwiches this week. The children wrote instructions to help them remember what to do. We have been looking at simple fractions including 1/2,1/4 and 3/4. The children are very excited that our seeds have grown at the allotment - see the photos on the Red Class main page of the website.

 

Next Week:

The children will be planning some menus for healthy eating as part of our science unit. We will be going to the shop to buy some healthy sandwich fillings. We will be having a picnic at the park on Thursday, weather permitting , making healthy eating our focus. The children will be making sandwiches for their picnic at school in the morning.

Week ending 20.4.18

This Week:

The children have all made a good start back at school after Easter. We have enjoyed a bit of sunshine this week, especially when we visited the allotment to find out that all our seeds are growing. We started our text The Giant jam Sandwich and have used noun phrases in our work. In numeracy we are learning about shapes and their properties.

Next Week:

The children will be making some sandwiches as part of our literacy and writing instructions. We shall continue with geometric reasoning in maths and  will link this to pattern. The children will re visit the allotment to continue our study on plants and their different  parts.

Week ending 16/3/18 

This Week

The children have amazed us with the progress they are making in literacy. Lots of great examples of writing across the curriculum from both reception and year ones. In numeracy we have started a new sequence of additive reasoning. The children are mastering skills and using them in new situations. 

Next Week:

We are continuing with our sequence Town Mouse and Country Mouse. We are hoping the weather is nice enough for us to plant our seeds at the allotment.

Week ending 23/2/18

This Week:

The children have had a good first week back after half term. We have enjoyed learning all about Ireland with Alice Gater Wildgust this week. The children made shamrocks out of clay.

Next Week:

We are looking forward to our trip to Paignton Zoo to learn about classification of animals.

Week ending 2/2/18

This Week:

This week we enjoyed having Hilary Ackland in to talk to us about Scotland. She taught us some Scottish songs, some Scottish words and told us about the story of the Loch Ness Monster. In literacy we have been writing Katie Morag stories. In Numeracy we have been looking at repeated addition.

Next Week:

On Tuesday we have our Grandparent afternoon. The children have invited their grandparents in to talk to the children about life when they were little and to answer some questions that the children have. We will be reading stories with our grandparents.

In Literacy we are starting a new story - katie Morag and the two grandmothers. In Numeracy we will continue with multiplicative reasoning.

Week ending 26/1/18

This week:

We have enjoyed learning more about Katie Morag and her adventures in literacy. In numeracy we have been learning about money and how to count with 2ps and 10ps. We have been looking at seasons and in particular, winter. We are filling out a daily weather chart to track the weather at this time of year.

Next Week:

Next week we will be writing our own Katie Morag stories. we will also be delivering some letters to some  villagers asking them to write to us at school to tell us about the village of East Budleigh and it's history. In numeracy we will be starting a new sequence of work on multiplicative reasoning. On Tuesday we will be cooking some scotch pancakes and we have invited Dr Hilary Ackland in to talk to us about Scotland. 

Week ending 19/1/18

This Week:

The children have really immersed themselves in the life of the wonderful character of Katie Morag. They have been writing about her and the imaginary Isle of Strauy. We continue with this over the next few weeks; extending the children's writing through it. We will be learning about the UK with a particular focus on Scotland. The year one children have homework to support this in their book bags. 

 

Next week:

 

We will continue with our work on the Katie Morag stories. Our next book will be katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers. We are looking forward to our Grandparent day . The children will be writing invitations next week.

In numeracy we shall continue with our numeracy skills of counting in 2's , 5's and 10's and translating this to use in other situations ; such as money.

Week ending 12/1/18

This Week:

The children have enjoyed learning about The Isle of Struay and Katie Morag. They have been comparing the Island with our locality. The children are also becoming quite proficient at counting in 2's and 10's. 

Next Week:

The children will be using their skills of counting by learning how to add 2ps and 10ps. We will be continuing to learn about the Uk, with a focus on Scotland.  

 

Week ending 5/1/18

This Week:

We have a had a good 2 days back at school. The children have already written some descriptions and tackled some new number skills; counting in 2's and 10's.

Next Week:

We will be continuing with our work on Katie Morag delivers the mail. We shall be comparing The Isle Of Struay with our locality and making a class map. This will be linked to our study of the UK.

In numeracy we will continue withg our work on counting in 2's and 10's and looking at early place value  of numbers to 100.

End of term:

What a fabulous term this has been! The children have worked and played hard and have made great progress in their learning. We look forward to the new year together and are excited about all we can experience and achieve together.

Week ending 15/12/17

This Week:

What a fabulous performance on Wednesday! We were so proud of the children; how they sang and performed. During the rest of the week we have worked on our letter writing to the man on the moon and subtraction in numeracy. The children enjoyed their Christmas dinner on Thursday and I have uploaded some photos of the children enjoying their feast! 

Next Week:

The last week !  We will be having our Christmas party on Tuesday 19th in the morning. Any contributions of food for the party will be gratefully received! Term ends on Thursday. We wish you a very Happy Christmas!

Week ending 8/12/17

This Week:

The children have loved getting into letter writing during our literacy sessions. We have made a huge moon and will be experimenting with different ways to send our letters up to our moon next week! In Numeracy we have been focusing on number skills. The children are enjoying role play in our Christmas post office.

Next Week:

we will be exploring different ways of sending our letters up to the moon with planes, rockets and pulley systems. The children will be performing their Christmas play and our very excited about this! Don't forget to get your tickets asap.

Week ending 1/12/17

This Week:

The children have loved learning our songs for the Christmas play this week. They are singing beautifully! The children have been writing about feelings after watching the man on the moon advert for literacy. In numeracy we have been looking at capacity using non standard measures.

 

Next Week:

We are looking at the theme of how to make someone feel loved this Christmas. The children will be coming up with ideas of their own other than giving and receiving presents. We have our dress rehearsal next week so please make sure costumes are in school by Monday if possible.

 

Week ending 24/11//17

This week:

The children have designed a chair for Charley Monkey to sit on as part of our text work on Peter's Chair. They will be building these over the next week. In numeracy we have been learning all about weighing using non standard measure. 

Next week:

We will finish off some of our work on Peter's Chair. We   are then starting a final sequence using the Christmas advert ' The man on the moon'. The children will be making binoculars, writing letters to 'the man on the moon' so he isn't lonely and creating some sentences about what we dream for. WE will link this to our growth mindset work. 

Week ending 17/7/11

This week:

The children have enjoyed exploring the area of measuring using non standard measures and making comparisons using the correct mathematical terms. We have written about our favourite toys in literacy and have enjoyed looking at photos of the each other as babies. The children had great fun on Friday with the obstacle course - check out the photos!

Next Week:

We will be looking at measurement through weight and mass next week. The children will continue their work with the book Peter's Chair and we will be extending our writing to sequences of sentences. The children will be beginning to work on the  Christmas songs for our play so expect lots of singing at home!

Week ending 10/11/17

This Week:

We enjoyed a walk around the village this week to look at trees. The children identified trees that stay green and those that lose their leaves in winter. We identified some trees by looking carefully at the leaves and took them back to school to do some leaf prints. The children have started to bring in pictures of themselves  as babies which have provided us with many oos and ahs! They have been writing sentences about their families. In numeracy we have finished our sequence of work on geometric reasoning and will be started a new sequence next week on number sense. 

Next Week:

We are going to be writing about ourselves; as babies and about our favourite baby toy. In Numeracy we are starting a sequence on Number Sense which will include work on measurement. It is Children in need Day next Friday so remember to dress up.

Week ending 3/11/17

This week:

The children visited Bicton as part of our study of plants,trees and seasons. We created some pictures out of autumn treasures. These will be on the website next week!

We have also be looking at 2d and 3d shape in numeracy. In literacy we have been focussing on our sentence toolkit; what you need to put in a sentence.

 

Next week:

We are going to continue our work on trees, plants and seasons with a walk around our village on Wednesday afternoon. We are also starting our new text in literacy about Peter's Chair. The children will need a photo of themselves as a baby and a photo of an item that they were fond of as a young child.

Week ending 13/10/17

This Week:

The children have enjoyed our new text this week and have been practising whistling! They have been looking at sentence writing and what needs to be in a sentence. In numeracy we have been looking at doubles and number sentences. In topic we have performed an experiment looking at absorbent and non absorbent materials.

Next Week: 

This is the last week before half term. The children will be working on a final piece of writing that will showcase all they have learnt over the half term. In numeracy we will continue to look at addititive reasoning. In topic we are going to continue with some experiments and recording what we find. 

Week ending 6/10/17

This Week:

This week Red Class have enjoyed our invention morning with parents and relations. They made some fabulous dragon traps  to finish off our work on Tell Me a Dragon.  We have been looking at additive reasoning in maths and have begun writing number sentences. In topic we have looked at how different materials are useful for different purposes.

Next Week:

We will start our sequence of work based on the text Whistle for Willie in earnest. The children will be writing instructions on how to do something they find hard as part of our work on Growth Mindsets.

Week Ending 29/9/17

This week:

The children have been finishing their unit of work on 'Tell me a Dragon'. They are learning how to construct a sentence using end punctuation and verbs. We have begun to make a castle and a life size dragon for the role play area. In numeracy we have been looking at numbers that are greater than or less than a given number. We have been learning how to write  number sentences using the greater than and less than signs.

 

Next Week:

We are looking forward to our invention day on Thursday morning. The children will be designing and making dragon traps with their adult helpers.

In numeracy we will be starting a new theme around additive reasoning . In literacy we will reading the book ' Whistle for Willie'. This will linked to growth mindset and encouraging the children to persevere with things they find hard.

Week ending 22.9.17

This Week:

The children were very excited to find our dragon egg had hatched this week; leaving feathers and mess behind! On Friday we headed out on a hunt to see if we could find where the baby dragon was. The children enjoyed planning for this hunt by drawing maps, making lists and painting dragons. 

In numeracy the children have been learning number bonds and how we can use them in our number work.

In topic work we are learning all about different materials, their names and properties. We will use this knowledge on our invention day on the 5th October.

Next Week:

We will be continuing with our test " Tell me a Dragon".  The children will get a chance to design and describe their own dragons. We are going to make a life size dragon to have in the classroom using various art skills. 

In Numeracy we will be finishing our number sense sequence.

 

Week ending 15/9/17

This Week:

The children have enjoyed starting our work on our text " Tell me a dragon." They were very excited to find a dragon's egg this morning in our class garden. We are hoping that it might hatch and we will have our own baby dragon to care for! The children have designed and described their own dragon's eggs.

In Numeracy we have been working on basic number sense; exploring numicon and pattern in number.

In topic we have started learning about different materials. The children have already used this knowledge to build some dragon traps of their own.

 

Next Week:

On Wednesday we will be going for our first walk of the year around the village. If you are around to help please come and let us know . It will be an exciting journey, but I can't tell you more as the children are yet to find out the purpose of our outing!!

 

Week ending 9/9/17:

This Week.

 

The children have settled really well into red class this week. Our new starters in both reception and year one have quickly become part of the class and school. We have been looking at the idea of growth mindset with the children;encouraging them to persevere and to keep on trying. This will be a continual,  underlying focus as we move forward through the term.

 

Next Week.

We will be starting our work on the book " Tell Me a Dragon." The children are very excited about this and can't wait to begin. We will be creating some dragon eggs and making individual designs. In Number we will be assessing the children's knowledge and using this to move forward in our use of basic number skills.
